The Program

The Master of Science degree in Health Coaching is a completely online, academic degree for working professionals comprised of 12 classes and a qualifying exam for a total of 36 trimester credits.

This program will provide you with current and historical knowledge, language and listening skills to encourage and inspire clients to attempt changes that will positively affect their health.

It will enable you to:

  • Critically examine assumptions underlying the health coaching practice.
  • Participate in the creation of an academic body of knowledge.
  • Employ comprehensive health history to design and implement personalized plans with clients.
  • Inspire accountability in clients to adhere to goals.
  • Improve interpersonal communication as a means to develop self-awareness in clients.
  • Understand behavior change and be able to demonstrate application in motivating others.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities and an adherence to ethical principles of the profession.

Program objectives

After you complete the program, you’ll be able to:

  • Understand professional literature of health coaching and discern the difference between untested opinion and emergent ideas subjected to true academic rigor.
  • Apply health coaching skills in a variety of practice settings including hospitals, clinics, health educational facilities, private practice, corporations and schools.
  • Understand and integrate the power of the mind/body connection to your practice.
  • Build and sustain positive and trusting coaching relationships with your clients.
  • Use keen sensory skills so that, as a coach, you can observe symptoms as they may arise in your own body and teach clients to do the same.

Prerequisites

IHCU students must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the US or an equivalent degree from another country. IHCU is not a practitioner training program and all applicants must have completed a suitable health coaching program.
